Welcome to The Discovery Academy

Simon French - Principle

I am delighted to welcome you to The Discovery Academy website and hope the information provided here will give you a flavour of the exciting educational opportunities we provide for all our students. The £21 million building provides world class facilities and an environment which inspires students of all abilities and interests, to achieve and succeed. Our highly qualified and professional staff are committed to delivering the highest standards of expert teaching and learning and our pastoral support team ensure that the needs of every individual student are catered for.

Visitors to the Academy are always impressed by the pride students have in themselves and the professionalism of staff. Ofsted visited the academy in October 2016 and judged leadership, quality of teaching, personal development, behaviour and welfare of our students as good. The summer 2017 GCSE results were the best results the Academy has ever achieved making it one of the most improved Academies in Stoke-on-Trent. Strong performance in Maths, English and Science as well as a number of other subjects have set a firm foundation for students moving on to post 16 study. Our aim at the Academy is to encourage students to Expect Excellence’ in everything that they do and we foster a culture of growth mindset that gives students the confidence and ambition for the future. With dedicated staff who can provide the necessary support and care, I believe all students can develop the skills to become successful.

The Academy engages with parents/carers and students to acquire views on what we need to do together, so the Academy can go from strength to strength. We already have some notable success and below and you can view some of the improvements through the principals video blogs. Too often, young people and adults have a fixed mindset that talent is limited and only a few have the skills to succeed. This is a myth we want to remove and it is our job together, to provide the confidence and belief that all students can overcome obstacles and succeed, however difficult it might be at times.

I am looking forward to working with parents/carers on the future journey of The Discovery Academy. We have incredible students who deserve the very best. Working together and with an uncompromising growth mindset, we will build an academy that the community is proud of.

GCSE PE - Standon Bowers Education Centre

On 06/12/2017 until 08/12/2017

Students studying GCSE PE are required to be assessed in three practical sporting activities which will form part of their final exam grade. In the past, students have achieved very well in climbing and have gained high marks towards their practical assessment grade.

These activities cannot be offered within the Academy as they require specialist equipment, teaching and resources, therefore we are organising a residential trip to Standon Bowers Education Centre from Wednesday 6th December to Friday 8th December 2017. Letters have been sent home.
