Welcome to The Discovery Academy

Simon French - Principle

I am delighted to welcome you to The Discovery Academy website and hope the information provided here will give you a flavour of the exciting educational opportunities we provide for all our students. The £21 million building provides world class facilities and an environment which inspires students of all abilities and interests, to achieve and succeed. Our highly qualified and professional staff are committed to delivering the highest standards of expert teaching and learning and our pastoral support team ensure that the needs of every individual student are catered for.

Visitors to the Academy are always impressed by the pride students have in themselves and the professionalism of staff. Ofsted visited the academy in October 2016 and judged leadership, quality of teaching, personal development, behaviour and welfare of our students as good..  Our aim at the Academy is to encourage students to Expect Excellence’ in everything that they do and we foster a culture of growth mindset that gives students the confidence and ambition for the future. With dedicated staff who can provide the necessary support and care, I believe all students can develop the skills to become successful.

The Academy engages with parents/carers and students to acquire views on what we need to do together, so the Academy can go from strength to strength.  We already have some notable success and below are the key improvements the Academy has made around achievement, teaching, behaviour and attendance.  Too often, young people and adults have a fixed mindset that talent is limited and only a few have the skills to succeed.  This is a myth we want to remove and it is our job together, to provide the confidence and belief that all students can overcome obstacles and succeed, however difficult it might be at times.

I am looking forward to working with parents/carers on the future journey of The Discovery Academy.  We have incredible students who deserve the very best.  Working together and with an uncompromising growth mindset, we will build an academy that the community is proud of.

Employer Experience Day

On Thursday 18th May a group of Year 10 students took part in an Employer Experience Day at the Sainsbury´s warehouse which is operated by DHL.

Throughout the day Managers from the business led sessions to show students what employers expect from prospective employees. Activities included a team building exercise, looking at CV´s and finally a dragons den activity where students had to create a careers app and then present their product to the ´dragons´.

All students said that they had enjoyed the experience. Students were also given a tour of the site and said it was an eye opening experience and that they may decide to work there once they leave.

We would like to thank the team at DHL for giving us this experience and look forward to working closer with them in the near future.
